Why Memorization?
Memorization is a critically important part of education. Should all of education be about rote memorization? Of course not! Education should primarily be conceptual in nature and should teach thinking skills.
However, memorization complements the conceptual learning process in key ways. Namely, it makes certain facts and content instantly accessible to the learner without the need to pause and look things up. Memorized facts become like mental "hooks" to which young learners can attach new information, and "handholds" to which they can feel anchored while reaching for new understandings.
